Philip Rosedale: About the Metaverse

 

Big Tech’s thirst for a new growth engine and bigger sales are leading big techs to turn their eyes to a new battlefield – the Metaverse. The IT giant Microsoft, Nvidia, video game companies and other IT and cloud companies are joining the competition to dominate the next computing platform. With the rise of Metaverse, Philip Rosedale who created Second life in 2003 which is regarded as the originator of the Metaverse has returned to the virtual reality scene. In 2003, Rosedale launched the online game where players used avatars to hang out, socialize with other players and make purchase. He is recognized as a metaverse pioneer in which big tech such as Meta and Microsoft are trying to bring metaverse technology to their business. When Second life was launched, more than 1 million users played Second Life and Rosedale was listed among Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2006. Second life was a virtual reality where different kinds of activities such as exhibitions, plays and concerts were possible using virtual currency which could be exchanged for real-world currency. Rosedale has made a warning against big tech’s user tracking.
